Chiropractic Services for Veterans

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is described by the ACA  as being “a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health.” Doctors of Chiropractic use gentle adjustments of the spine to restore proper alignment of the vertebrae and relieve the pain associated with misalignments, or subluxations. Chiropractors also use massage and other therapy techniques in a personalized care plan designed to help you achieve your health goals. Because it is non-invasive and drug-free, chiropractic care is rapidly becoming a preferred option for those suffering from back, neck, or nerve pain, as well as a host of health problems.

How Can Chiropractic Treatments Benefit Me?

Because of the rigorous physical demand of being in the military, veterans are particularly prone to suffering from back, neck, and nerve pain. Many also seek treatment for muscle spasms, headaches, and pain related to an injury. A professional chiropractor will work with you to develop a treatment plan that will ease pain, restore mobility, and allow your body to begin to heal. Because these treatments target the source of the pain and not just the symptoms, they are extremely effective in treating problems associated with the musculoskeletal system.

Does The VA Offer Chiropractic Care?

In 2002, President George W. Bush signed a law guaranteeing chiropractic care to anyone who is eligible for treatment through the VA. Despite this fact, many service members do not realize that this option is available to them. While access to chiropractic treatment is guaranteed, not all VA facilities have Doctors of Chiropractic on the premises. If this is the case, you may get a referral from your primary care physician to see a private chiropractor using a “fee-basis” option. If you are denied a referral for chiropractic treatment by your PCP, either for a chiropractor through the VA or a private doctor, you can appeal this decision through the VA.

What is the Patriot Project?

Because the need for chiropractic care is so great among veterans, and because access to this care is still limited in spite of the progress made, the Patriot Project was launched in 2012 by Dr. Timothy P. Novelli. The goal of the project is to get as many service members the treatment they need, free of out of pocket cost to them. Chiropractors who are working with the Patriot Project pledge to treat at least one eligible patient per week. The project has grown into a national movement with participating providers in all 50 states. Patients eligible for care under the Patriot Project include active-duty military and their families, veterans with service-related disabilities, and all Gold Star dependents. If you qualify for care under the Patriot Project, ask your local chiropractor if they are participating provider to learn more.
